Hampshire College in Massachusetts, one of America's most LGBTQ+-friendly institutions, is closing. Trustees announced on Thursday that the small liberal arts college must shut down. Years of financial problems cannot be resolved.
The school was recognised for inclusive policies towards LGBTQ+ students. It had its own Queer Community Alliance Center. It offered transfers for students leaving other colleges due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies. Hampshire also organised conferences promoting greater tolerance. However, student numbers dropped below 750 this year. Revenues had been insufficient for years.
Last year, state officials in Florida and elsewhere introduced opposing policies. Some colleges removed rainbow flags and became less welcoming to LGBTQ+ students. Hampshire tried countering this trend by offering greater support. Unfortunately, funding could not follow. The college enters history alongside its progressive mission.
