A Quarter Century: Marriage for Everyone
The Netherlands became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage 25 years ago. This milestone changed everything for many people.
It feels right to mark this milestone. Exactly 25 years ago, the Netherlands opened doors to same-sex marriage. A moment that changed everything for many gay and lesbian couples.
That decision was not obvious at the time. The Netherlands was among the first nations worldwide to take this bold step. In 2001, gay and lesbian couples could finally marry. Just like everyone else. No exceptions, no special rules. Simply the same right.
A quarter century later, remembering this moment still matters greatly. For many people, this meant everything. Finally, they could recognise their love equally. Just as their parents, friends and colleagues did. No compromises. No waiting.
The Netherlands proved it was possible. Other countries followed our example. Today, same-sex couples can marry in over thirty countries. It started here, 25 years ago. That gives us reason enough to reflect and celebrate this decision today. Because this was good for our nation.
