Coffee chain Philz removes rainbow flags: facing major backlash
Coffee chain Philz Coffee has removed rainbow flags from all stores. Thousands of customers and employees have signed a petition against the decision.
American coffee chain Philz Coffee has removed rainbow flags from its stores. The decision has drawn significant criticism from customers and employees.
Philz Coffee operates locations in California and Chicago. Some stores had displayed rainbow flags, but early this month the company ordered their removal. Chief executive Mahesh Sadarangani explained the decision as ensuring uniform branding. "We are working towards a more consistent, inclusive experience across all locations, including removing various flags and other décor," he said. "This is a change in how our stores look, not who we are."
The decision has been poorly received. Over 6,700 people have signed a petition on Change.org requesting the flags be restored. According to the petition, staff and customers feel "confused and unsupported." The petition states rainbow flags are important because they signal everyone is welcome, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
This is not the first such conflict. Boston University also removed rainbow flags but reversed course after significant criticism. The American city of Boise banned rainbow flags, yet business owners displayed them anyway.
