A conservative legal group led by Trump adviser Stephen Miller has asked the federal government to investigate Maryland's largest school districts. The group objects to policies protecting transgender students. This reflects a wider dispute over who controls American public school policies.

America First Legal filed a complaint this week with the US Department of Justice and Education. The group accuses Montgomery County Public Schools of breaching federal privacy laws. The school allows transgender students to use their chosen name and pronouns without automatically notifying parents. America First Legal claims the school wrongfully withholds information from parents.

The conflict emerges as the Trump administration restricts transgender rights nationally. Maryland takes the opposite side of this debate. The state has a law clearly protecting transgender and LGBTQ+ students from discrimination. This directly conflicts with federal policy.

The school argues transgender students have the right to keep their status private. Staff cannot tell parents unless legally required or the student consents. America First Legal wants federal officials to investigate and force the school to change its policies.
