Feminist: We need more complainants, not fewer
Researcher Sara Ahmed believes organisations must listen to complainants. They help expose institutional problems that need addressing.
According to feminist researcher Sara Ahmed, people should complain more. Not less. She views complaints as valuable resistance within organisations. Whether in LGBTQ+ communities, universities, or government agencies.
Ahmed argues that complainants serve an important function. They highlight problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. Many institutions see complaints as troublesome. The researcher says this must change. Complainants help organisations improve. They voice what others stay silent about.
The feminist emphasises this applies especially to marginalised groups. LGBTQ+ people have traditionally had fewer opportunities to be heard. Complaints are a way to challenge power. Ahmed sees complainants not as problematic, but necessary for change.
Listening to complaints is not always pleasant. Yet Ahmed argues that is precisely the point. If you are comfortable, nothing changes. Truly inclusive organisations must take complaints seriously. They cannot silence those who speak up.
