Taylor Brown is the first openly transgender person leading a New York City agency. Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed her in March as head of the new LGBTQ Affairs Bureau. Brown is a civil rights advocate facing significant challenges.

The first task is urgent. Transgender Americans face increasing federal-level attacks, Brown says. 'The transgender community faces pressure from all sides, including federal government,' she told WNYC. 'We must closely monitor these needs. They are crucial and very urgent.' The bureau must act quickly and provide concrete protection.

The second task runs deeper. Brown wants to tackle structural inequality spanning decades. This involves work, housing, education and policing. Transgender and LGBTQ people of colour feel this injustice most. Gender-affirming care is essential to Brown personally. 'This is life-saving care for transgender people,' she says. The bureau will prioritise this.

Brown reflects on New York's history. 'Transgender women started the modern civil rights movement here,' Brown states. 'I am truly proud of that and feel deeply honoured.' Her appointment marks a turning point for the city.
