France, do not turn your back on LGBTQI communities worldwide!
Several LGBTQI and human rights organisations are calling on France to support LGBT+ communities globally. The situation in Senegal, where queer people face active persecution, makes this appeal even more urgent.
17 May is the International Day Against Homophobia. It also marks action against biphobia and transphobia. This date is vital for LGBTQI communities worldwide.
This year, the situation in Senegal is grave. The Senegalese government actively pursues queer people. Many LGBTQI individuals live in daily fear. They risk arrest or violence.
Several French organisations have responded to this crisis. LGBTQI, feminist and human rights groups signed a joint appeal. They demand swift action from the French State. France must show solidarity with LGBT+ people globally.
This appeal comes at a critical moment. French presidential elections will occur in 2027. So this is the last 17 May before that important deadline. The organisations want France to take a position now. They don't want to wait after the elections.
The organisations are demanding concrete action from the French State. They want France to better protect LGBT+ refugees. They also want France to pressure countries criminalising homosexuality. Over 60 countries worldwide still punish same-sex relationships.
France has a long tradition of defending human rights. The organisations remind the government of this historical responsibility. They believe France must set an example for other nations. International solidarity is a fundamental value.
French LGBTQI activists are deeply concerned. They see rights declining in several countries worldwide. They think France's silence sends the wrong message. Acting now is an urgent necessity.
On 17 May, demonstrations and events are happening throughout France. These gatherings show support for persecuted LGBTQI communities. The fight for equality and dignity continues, in France and across the world.
