A lesbian couple in Key West, Florida, is taking legal action now. The city forced them to paint over their rainbow-coloured fence. The couple is suing the city for rights violations.

The two women painted their fence in rainbow colours. They protested a city decision to remove rainbow crosswalks. These crosswalks were part of Pride celebrations. The couple wanted to show LGBTQ+ community support.

City officials ordered the couple to remove the rainbow colours. They said the fence broke local property appearance rules. The couple initially refused. But the city kept pressuring them. Eventually, they were forced to repaint the fence.

The couple believes this was unjust. They say the city targeted them for being LGBTQ+. Their lawyers say painting the fence was free speech. Removing it violates the First Amendment. This protects American freedom of expression rights.

The Pride crosswalks removal was already controversial. Many LGBTQ+ residents and supporters opposed that decision. The crosswalks symbolised community inclusion importantly. Key West is known as welcoming to LGBTQ+ people. Removing them sent a different message to many.

The lawsuit has drawn more attention to this issue. LGBTQ+ rights organisations are following the case carefully. Some have publicly supported the couple. They say this reflects a wider trend. LGBTQ+ symbols are being removed across the United States.

The couple says they will keep fighting. They want the right to express their identity. On their own property especially. They hope their case protects other LGBTQ+ people. No court date has been announced yet. Key West has not released a detailed public statement.
