The Netherlands marks 25 years since legalising marriage for everyone. Many couples remain grateful for this important milestone today.

Twenty-five years ago, the Netherlands took a significant step forward. On 1 April 2001, the country became the first worldwide. It opened marriage to everyone. Same-sex couples could finally marry. They had the same rights as heterosexual friends and family. This milestone is celebrated this year.

That decision was quite progressive at the time. The Netherlands led many other countries. Today, more than 30 countries have introduced equal marriage. Still, the Netherlands remains a pioneer. It champions equal rights for all. The law has helped countless couples formalise their love.

The organisation COC is marking this anniversary. The moment invites reflection on achievements made. Many gay and lesbian people have achieved their dream. They have married and built families. Yet we know much work remains undone. Discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ people still occur. But these 25 years show that change is possible.

Want to celebrate this moment? Many cities are organising activities and events. Check local organisation websites for more information. Or simply pause and reflect. Love is now officially treated equally.
