Hirst campaigned for years supporting equal marriage for gay and lesbian couples. He was also a candidate for the Sex Party.
This is a striking move. One Nation is not known as an LGBTQ+ rights advocate. The party has different priorities.
Hirst wins his seat after equal marriage became law in Australia. This happened in 2017.
It remains unclear how his new party relates to his activist past. One Nation focuses mainly on immigration and economic issues.
